Welcome to another installment of Artist du Jour: mini interviews with the creative kind!  This week’s interviewee, Andrea Peterson, will knock your socks off with her lovely fashion illustrations and gorgeous paintings… thank you for not training dolphins, Andrea!

Artist du Jour: Andrea Peterson

Who are you and what do you do?

I’m an artist, a swimmer, and a beach-lover who currently works at an art gallery in Scottsdale, AZ (when I’m not painting or doing freelance illustration).

Who or what inspires you?

Tons of artists: Frida Kahlo, Gustav Klimt, love the whole Art Nouveau movement – everyone knows and loves Mucha but I also love Arthur Beardsley, and of course my artist peers who I feel close thanks to social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter (and blogs such as this!) where we can share our current work and passions. This is especially important to me since my current ‘studio situation’ is located on one very messy side of my bedroom (so my ‘studio mates’ are people like you on the computer and my dog Frida, ha).

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

Invisible. I love Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak – it’s brilliant and I would want that power, no doubt!

What has been your most satisfying moment at an artist thus far?

Completing the cover illustration for Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration, and attending the launch party for the book in London. Also, whenever I sell original art to a client and/or hear a fan’s feedback it’s greatly rewarding and encouraging since my art is such a part of who I am.

If you are a fellow sufferer of the dreaded artist’s block, what do you find to be the antidote?

Swimming, yoga, happy hour, traveling – anything that’s getting outside and away from paint fumes (ha).

If you weren’t an artist, what profession do you think you’d be in?

Probably a dolphin trainer at Sea World or a marine biology study group doing shark research.  Growing up I always said I wanted to be an artist AND a dolphin trainer, but so far there hasn’t been enough time to do both. Who knows? Never say never. For now, I swim several times a week and use my imagination.  I’ve also always loved forensic anthropology and archaeology; there’s something magical about studying ancient relics where you’re unveiling historical narratives that shape history.

Where can we find you ?
